There are only a couple of things I need to tell you here: I'm a designer, an art director and I also like to think I'm a pretty nice guy. Not only a designer by trade, I'm a designer by nature. The desire to create things and use my head to solve problems both visually and strategically is something I've been interested in since I was a kid.
I studied Graphic Design at Fanshawe College, about which I learned from working at a screen printing shop. I always try to think back to producing designs by hand in that shop, and the idea of crafting a physical thing with care often informs my approach to design.
After Fanshawe, I managed a print shop and worked as a freelance designer / developer for about 4 years. At that time I was creating print and digital work for my own clients, as well as working for agencies and companies on everything from web design to illustration to packaging.
An opportunity arose to serve as Associate CD for a growing agency in London, Ontario called Arcane. When I started at Arcane the art department consisted of myself and an aging Golden Retriever named Jazz. I was instrumental in the growth of the company from 11 people and a dog in a small old church in downtown London, to a team of over 90 people with offices in London, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. At that point, I was interested in what was on the other side of the fence (in-house work).
For the next two years, I was working as Manager, Brand Design at Umbra - a global houseware design company based in Toronto, directing all brand creative. That included packaging, their catalog, social media, photography and all internal and external communications. I also began the process of planning and designing an entirely new website for Umbra. I implemented the use of project management software, as well as written processes to increase efficiency and profitability. Short and long term goals for my team were also set up, and I reconfigured the workflow in the studio to function as a small internal agency.
After two years at Umbra, I felt it was time to go back out on my own to focus on branding & UX design. Working with a collective of talented designers, developers and other creative disciplines I am fortunate enough to be able to wake up and do what I love every single day, while working with amazing clients and partners.
Throughout my career, some of the brands I've had the pleasure to work for are of course Umbra, Vans, GoodLife Fitness, Roots, Holt Renfrew, Asics, Canadian Tire, Dine Alone Records, Info-Tech Research Group, and stratech.com to name a few.
